But godliness with contentment is great gain. For brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us therewith be content. (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
Does it seem like life is a roller coaster and we sometimes are the victims of it? We feel tossed to and fro like we are in a tempest. And honestly, as the years have gone by, I feel like it is just getting worse… But a lot of our problems are our own fault. Our hearts are not “right with God” as they used to say. We want lots of worldly “stuff” that doesn’t do a thing for us spiritually. We want houses and lands and big toys, like cars and investments and 401(K) plans, etc., etc… And we’re never happy…
I remember in Germany when we first got there, we had to live in the church attic… It was one of the most eerie experiences I’ve ever had… I realized we had left our home in Florida far behind and we were “homeless” now and going to live in the middle of a snowy parking lot. When you went to bed, you heard the strange noises of mice running around in the ceiling and in the middle of the night, a train would pass right next door and make a big racket that would wake you up.
Finally, just before you woke up you heard a quiet little noise that meant the heat was coming back on again in the radiators. It only did that during the day. Also, there was no internet connection up there. You had to go down to the kitchen to get that and while you were using a mouse, you might see a real one run by you and cause you to scream…
The Lord reminded me of this scripture one day there and I knew He was right. We should be content with only clothes and food… We don’t even have to have a home or even a roof over our heads. And that’s real “godliness with contentment”. Think about that and be joyful.
